Over the course of a year, the typical woman wearing ShaToBu all day during everyday activities can burn up to 30,000 additional calories, which is equivalent to 8.8 pounds of fat lost. We encourage all women to lead healthy lives and engage in recommended levels of physical activity and strength training. ShaToBu increases the impact of everyday movement but does not replace the need to be physically active.

The more a person moves throughout the day, the greater the benefit from ShaToBu. To get the most from ShaToBu, we recommend wearing it 12 hours a day, 7 days a week day during normal daily activity. ShaToBu is comfortable enough to wear all day, every day.

Q17 - Can ShaToBu be worn in an exercise class to make a workout more effective?
ShaToBu is designed to work at the rate of natural movement, like walking, climbing stairs or even doing yoga. The level of resistance in ShaToBu would make vigorous exercise or higher speed movements less effective.
The science behind ShaToBu
Q18 - How did you test the product to determine its calorie-burning effect?
Several studies were conducted with a total of 45 women to test the calorie-burning effect. Independent researchers from the Department of Medicine and the Exercise Physiology Research Lab at the University of Virginia measured the oxygen output of 15 women engaged in everyday activities with and without ShaToBu. Oxygen output was measured on subjects walking at about 1.5 mph on a treadmill and also climbing stairs. Oxygen output is directly proportional to calories burned, so it can be used to measure the garment's calorie-burning effect.

ShaToBu is based on science and the principles of resistance training. To prove the concept behind it, researchers at the University of Virginia conducted scientific studies which showed that women wearing ShaToBu burn up to 12% more calories during everyday activities such as walking and climbing stairs.

Studies were also done to measure resistance, showing that ShaToBu provides over 30% more resistance than traditional shapers, causing muscle contraction and creating the toning effect.

Q23 - Is this garment comfortable in the summer when it's hot?
ShaToBu is comfortable enough to wear all day every day. The fabric has overall moisture-wicking properties with an innovative finish for exceptional breathability and dryness and includes a moisture-wicking gusset. As with all shapewear, some women may get warmer than others in hot or humid conditions.
Q24 - How much resistance should I expect to feel when wearing ShaToBu?
The resistance you feel while wearing ShaToBu will be more noticeable during activities such as climbing stairs or walking up hill. It may be slightly less during walking at a normal pace on a flat surface. To be comfortable enough to wear all day, it will not feel as intense as a resistance-based workout you do in the gym. The more you wear it and the more you move throughout your day, the greater the benefit.
Q25 - Why are the seamless resistance bands only in the back of ShaToBu?
ShaToBu is based on the principles of resistance training, a type of exercise that challenges the muscles by overcoming an opposing force. Since the main movement in walking is when the leg moves forward, we placed resistance bands in the back of the garment to oppose that forward movement and create the most effort for those muscles. There is no need for resistance bands in the front of the leg as there is very little backward leg movement to oppose. This design provides for optimal
caloric burn.
Q26 - How should I wash ShaToBu?
To extend the life of your ShaToBu shaper, hand-wash it separately in mild detergent (no fabric softener of bleach!) and line dry. The calorie-burning and muscle-toning effectiveness of your ShaToBu shaper comes from its seamless resistance bands, so proper care is key to keeping it in top shape!

Q28 - Does size matter with ShaToBu?
ShaToBu fits true to size. To maximize the benefits, it's important that you use the size chart to ensure you choose the one that's right for you from the size chart. For example, if you are 115 lbs., select size small; size medium starts at 116 lbs. Yes, 1 lb. makes a difference! And remember: if you're 5'7" or over, make sure to select one of our tall sizes.
Q29 - Why is it important for the leg band to reach just above the knee?
In order to engage the hip flexors, the seamless resistance bands must extend the full length of that muscle group. This will maximize the toning and burning effect.
